Maxwell Street Market | Shihua Chen, Yunsong Liu

This project focuses on the informality of urban economy in Chicago with several stages of mapping, modelling, and intervening. Our intent is to depicting and celebrating the specific urban landscape generated by the vibrant civic engagement through informal economies. Our selected site is Maxwell Street Market, one weighs a lot both historically and memorably in the city formation and citizen’s life of Chicago. The intervention are less about our reading of the city than the possibilities and belief in the creation of citizens. There are mainly three parts of the project: contractible tents, permanent building, and open space, dealing with temporality and seasonality, administration, and buffering issues.
